Mobile app for street Carnival in Brazil

Product design

"How might we make tourists feel like a carioca during the carnival in Rio de Janeiro ?"
That was my dream to create carnaRio!

*Carioca (Portuguese pronunciation: [kaɾiˈɔkɐ]) is a demonym used to refer to people born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The original word, "kara'i oka", comes from the indigenous Tupi language meaning "house of carijó", which was a native tribe of Rio de Janeiro who lived in the vicinity of the Carioca River.

My Role

A solo project where I made a Product Design with User Experience and user-centered Approach. Developing all these tasks: Research, Planning, Brand Design, Illustration, UX Writing, Lo-fi Prototype, Usability Tests and High-fidelity Prototype.

Objectives

The objective of this project is to identify user’s pain points while people are planning a trip to Brazil for the carnival event to make tourists feel welcomed and safe to enjoy their time in Rio de Janeiro and have fun.

The Problem

Carnival in Brazil is the biggest street festival in the world, over 7 million people are expected for 2020 in Rio. There are different events happening at the same time so local people use social networks to be notified about events happening around them and ask their friends. However, if you do not have a friend in the city you need to find events by yourself.
The process of trying to find an event that you like is time-consuming and very confusing for people, especially for tourists who are not from Brazil or do not speak Portuguese and have no idea about all different types of musical rhythms that Brazil has or even how street carnival works.

The Solution

CarnaRio app is a mobile application designed with a user-centered approach. It's easier to user find street events happening around them. Event Listings are customized around the user's GPS Location and Interests so the app is like a local friend giving good suggestions. Furthermore, everything the user needs to know is provided within the app including event details, ticket prices, beaches or places to visit, or even how to behave and safety tips to enjoy carnival like a carioca (local person). In addition, as we know that people like people there's a social network in the app to help users to find a local friend organizing meetings and have peer-to-peer communication with other attendees sharing similar interests.
